Stability AI closed a $76 million Series B on August 25 - the first funding round to draw direct equity investment from all three major music labels at once. Electronic Arts, AMD Ventures and returning backers including Sean Parker and Eric Schmidt joined the round, taking Stability AI's total funding to $232 million under CEO Prem Akkaraju. It follows catalogue-licensing deals Stability struck earlier this year with Universal, Warner and EA to train new models on their music and IP.
Universal and Warner settled their AI-generator lawsuits months ago. Sony is still fighting Suno and Udio in court. Read together, the majors are not retreating from AI music - they are choosing which companies get to build it, on catalogue terms they control.
The fight was never about whether AI-generated music happens. It is about who owns the pipe it runs through.
