Snap sets its first public launch event for Specs AR glasses

Snap has spent two years showing its AR Specs only inside rooms it controlled.
On September 16 in Los Angeles, that ends. Snap is holding its first full public launch event for Specs, and CEO Evan Spiegel is giving what the company calls its first in-depth look - covering AI assistance, work tools, entertainment and shared experiences. Developers and creators at the event will be among the first people outside Snap to wear the shipping hardware.
Preorders for Specs opened in June, at AWE, against a $2,195 price and a $200 refundable deposit. Three months later, the device is still something people have paid to reserve without anyone independent having tried it. That gap between preorder and proof is unusual for hardware at this price, and it closes in two weeks.
The AR glasses race has mostly been argued in spec sheets - weight, brightness, field of view, chip generation. September 16 asks a different question: what changes about a normal day once a stranger, not a Snap employee, puts the device on. That is a harder test than any spec sheet, and it is the one that decides whether this category earns daily use.
