Signify just put a number on what AI removes from lighting design: 80 percent of the cost and time.

The company's Interact Landmark Flex system made its debut this month at the Shanghai International Light Festival, running September 17 to October 16. Instead of programming colour, brightness and timing by hand across separate control systems, an operator describes the mood or atmosphere they want in plain language. A generative AI agent converts that description into a "light recipe" and drives the lighting and performance equipment in real time. Signify says the approach cuts lighting content planning cost and development time by roughly 80 percent, and it is rolling the same generative layer out from road and office lighting into landscape and architectural installations.

Architectural and landscape lighting has run on the same workflow for decades: a designer builds a cue by hand, tests it on site, and revises it against the schedule and budget available. When the interface for that work becomes a sentence instead of a programming session, the limiting factor stops being technical skill and starts being imagination and budget for time on site. That is the same arithmetic that keeps lighting out of reach for most live events - the tool got cheaper to operate before it got cheaper to buy.
