On July 30, the Alliance for Open Media published Open Audio Renderer v1. AOMedia is the consortium behind the AV1 video codec, with Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Netflix, Nvidia and Samsung on its board.

OAR takes immersive audio packaged in AOMedia's IAMF format and renders it correctly for whatever the listener actually has: stereo speakers, a full surround system, or binaural playback over headphones. One mix, instead of a separate one for every output format.

That is the same move AV1 made for video: turn something every platform used to solve on its own into shared infrastructure. When spatial audio stops being a proprietary problem, it stops being expensive to support everywhere, and that changes who can afford to build for it.

Audio is becoming infrastructure, not an afterthought bolted onto a headset.
