Apple's earlier Immersive Video work — concerts, nature footage — was shot and edited before anyone watched it. Tonight's game is 8K, 180-degree 3D, filmed and delivered live, with its own three-person commentary team calling the action in real time. No second take if a camera misses a play. It streams in nine countries through Apple TV, the first of five Immersive broadcasts MLB and Apple have scheduled through September 18.
Pre-rendered immersive video proves a format can look good. Live immersive production proves it can be trusted under pressure, with nothing fixed after the fact. Sports broadcasting just became the proving ground for that harder problem.
