Bose buys FMOD maker Firelight Technologies

Bose just bought a game-audio company.
On October 1, Bose Corporation acquired Firelight Technologies, the Melbourne studio behind FMOD — audio middleware used across the game industry to make sound respond to what is actually happening on screen, rather than play back a fixed mix. FMOD Studio handles the authoring; the FMOD Engine runs playback in real time, built to plug into Unity, Unreal and custom engines across consoles, desktop, mobile and web.
Bose says the deal extends real-time audio capability beyond gaming into VR/AR, automotive and other environments where sound has to react to live events, and that FMOD will stay open and keep serving its existing developer community. It follows Bose's acquisition of StreamUnlimited, a connected-audio hardware and software integrator, this past June.
A six-decade-old speaker company buying a game-audio middleware studio is a specific bet: that software making sound respond to the moment, not just the mix, is now infrastructure worth owning outright — and that gaming was never the ceiling for it.
