Australia's ARIA charts will exclude songs made primarily by AI

Australia's official music charts will no longer count a song as a hit if AI made it.

ARIA's updated chart rules, effective from Monday's chart, exclude recordings where generative AI produced the entirety or the primary portion of the creative work. A track that uses AI in a supporting role can still qualify — the test ARIA has published is whether human creative input remains the primary driver of the work, with no stream or chart manipulation concerns.

The rule follows a Queensland producer's AI-assisted cover of Madonna's 'Like a Prayer,' released without disclosure, which spent months near the top of the Australian charts before he added AI vocal and drum credits on Spotify after listeners raised questions. ARIA can now remove ineligible recordings, adjust chart positions and revoke chart awards, with an appeal process for artists who contest a call.

This is the first time a national chart authority has had to write a working definition of "human enough." Streaming platforms, award shows and royalty bodies are all sitting with the same question, and Australia just published an actual test instead of a blanket ban.
